This week !!! techn010ffspring !!! is honored to participate in an online residency with TRANSIENT!!! They are so grateful for this exciting opportunity to share their work in this inspirational context!
Founded and Curated by Artist Lydia Griffiths, Transient is an Online Residency Programme via Instagram, supporting creatives who explore the relationship between Art & Technology.
Today’s residency activities involve animating the first part of !!! techn010ffspring !!! [v.9]. The text for the whole animation was generated by Copy.ai by entering in several texts and trying to output the most absurd results by including 1) names of previous !!! techn010ffspring !!!, 2) code from the !!! techn010ffspring !!! idea generator and 3) text from patents by women from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The digital voices were created using freetts.com.
First Post For the residency!
“Meet !!! techn010ffspring !!! [v.9]! They were birthed last week in sprightly anticipation of this exciting TRANSIENT residency! They are so honored to be here! During this residency, they will have digital life breathed into them each day with new animated movements!
!!! techn010ffspring !!! [v.9] has learned to speak! They have been doing AI Art and Copy Generator research and learned that if they enter absurd combinations of words as prompts, the results are deliciously, beautifully absurd and resemble the enchantingly, incongruous results that the human children they know well can conjure in their imaginations. When the human children they know use words, these words have meanings that are fluid, their uses unexpected, contexts ever-changing, while still referencing morsels of a winding reality.
Today’s animation illuminates the first phrase of the verbal narrative: “Louise is a woman in her late 30’s who has recently been diagnosed with a case of the “plop-eye”. The doctor told her that she needs to wear a pessary on her eye at all times to help prop her eye open.”
FYI the illness “plop-eye” does not seem to exist and was generated by COPY.ai as a prompt result. Also, a pessary is not used for eyes, it is, in actuality “a removable device that is inserted into the birth canal to provide support in the area of a prolapse. In most cases, a pessary is used when a woman who has a prolapse wants to avoid surgery or has medical problems that make surgery too risky.” (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/16036-pessaries)
One of the things that !!! techn010ffspring !!! [v.9] has learned through the research on AI is that many of the results are gender and racially biased. By pushing the results into more and more absurd territory, they seem to move past these biases into a sort of fluid space where they break down these boundaries in SOME cases (but, NOT ALL, unfortunately). !!! techn010ffspring !!! revels in this absurd space where the boundaries are fluid!”
